The Secret of the Law of Attraction

The Secret of the Law of Attraction

“The Secret”, Rhonda Byrne wrote this self-help bestseller in 2006 which met with wide acclaim upon its release. The book’s basic premise is that a natural law known as the law of attraction, governs the entire universe. What the book propounded was that a person attracts life experiences, events, people and situations that resonate with the frequency of that person’s feelings and thoughts. What this essentially means is that people who think positively and feel positive emotions more often tend to attract the best of life like increased wealth, health and overall happiness. So good attracts good, if not immediately then later in life.

According to the book, the law of attraction determines the universe’s complete order including the lives of human beings through the process of “like attracting like”. So when we think and feel in a certain way, a related frequency is released into the universe and it attracts to us situations and events on that same frequency. So if you feel angry and think angry thoughts then you will attract events and situations that make you even angrier. “The Secret” contends that the ingredients of a happy life like health, wealth and relationships can be attracted by one’s positive thoughts and feelings.

The book starts off by explaining the intricacies of the law of attraction. It goes on to detail its historical significance and extols men and women who used this power to their advantage. As per the book, our thoughts radiate this magnetic power or frequency. The three step creative process for realizing human dreams is a prominent feature of “The Secret”. It directs people to ask, to believe and finally to receive.  The final pages of the book offer a more spiritual perspective of this law of attraction and its relationship with life and the world.

Being one of the most popular books and films in the last decade, “The Secret” has attracted a fair degree of criticism from both traditional and modern forms of the media. Critics contend that the book gives false hope or misguides people who are suffering for various reasons. Instead of offering constructive solutions and guidance, the book relies too much on abstract ideas which can actually do a person more harm than good. Rhonda Byrne’s argument that people who are affected by natural disasters actually bring it upon themselves stirred quite a hornet’s nest. All said and done, the book has its share of admirers and haters and will continue to divide people in the years to come.
